Isaac was excited for another lesson of Charms. The second term was coming to a close, so he felt as if he should end the year with a fun lesson. While this lesson would be fun, it would also be crucial to the students. With that in mind, Isaac made his way around the classroom, inspecting that each area had what it needed. The room appeared to be in order. Isaac glanced at his watch; it was nearly time to begin. With a wave of his wand he opened the previously locked door. Students would seen be entering the room.

His first year at teaching had taught Isaac a lot about himself. He enjoyed teaching and watching his students cast new charms, it was almost as though he were learning them for the first time himself. It also made him nostalgic for his own days at Hogwarts, learning spells and practicing his charms in empty corridors. Sadly, those days were gone and a new generation would be learning the spells he himself had been learning over a decade ago. These sentiments did not dampen his mood, though, because he was still excited for today's lesson. All of his students, the OWL and NEWT students in particular, would be learning fun spells. Although some wouldn't be applicable in every day life, they would still be nice to know.

He moved to stand beside his desk and near the chalkboard. On it was scribbled a simple set of instructions:

First and Second years on the left.
Third and Fourth years in the center
OWL and NEWT students on the right

You may talk amongst yourselves until class begins

As the students entered, they would notice each part of their room was a bit different. The first and second years had bowls of water lining the wall. The center of the room was lined with targets with a shield charm erected behind them. On the far side of the room where the oldest students would be standing were pedestals with small items placed on them. These items were covered by a basic shield charm. Soon, the students began to enter the room to see their various work stations and a smirking Professor Drummond.

On a beautiful mid-April afternoon, Evelyn arrived in the Charms corridor ten minutes early, as was her habit. She glanced at the students already lined up outside of the obviously locked classroom, giving a friendly wave or a nod to those people that she recognized, then cracking open her copy of The Standard Book of Spells, Grade 1. She excitedly wondered which of the spells she would be learning today.

She wasn't waiting in the hallway when, promptly at two, the door was unlocked and the students were able to file neatly inside. Her brown eyes alighted on the smug-looking Professor Drummond before sliding past him to the chalkboard that he was standing beside. It simply stated:

First and Second years on the left.
Third and Fourth years in the center.
OWL and NEWT students on the right.

Evelyn looked to the left and noticed the bowls of water lining the wall before heading over to one, assuming that there was one bowl of water per student.

The Spring days ahead made studies a little difficult to concentrate on, and Hugo was also busy with a large number of class projects ahead of end-of-year exams. However, Charms was his best class by far, and he'd already been focusing on spells that were in advance of his year of study. Any chance to improve his skills in a class setting, Hugo would take full advantage. So, bookbag on shoulder and with his wand tucked into his holster, he reached the classroom early, as he often did. He looked around, waved to the Professor, and caught sight of the instructions. The class was divided into sections, and he went to stand in the center, and examined the practice areas that had been set up for today. Their exercise had targets backed up by a shield charm. Accuracy was perhaps something they were going to practice here. Hugo's spells invariably worked well, if his aim wasn't always perfect. Not like his eagle-eyed girlfriend, who almost always hit whatever she aimed at. Now, as he approached the end of the year, he was dueling ready.

He slid his wand from the holster and polished it up on his sleeve. Then he returned it to its place, and pulled out his Standard Book of Spells for his year and looked it over. Some of the spells they had never practiced, and they were getting close to the end of the year. He wondered which ones they were going to do today. There were spells on sending lightning bolts at an opponent, causing things to spin at high speeds, and things that he'd already mastered like homing charms; none seemed to fit the use of a target. He set the book aside, and glanced towards the door, while he looked for the familiar red mop of hair and moon face of Valentina. He nodded to a girl from Ravenclaw [Evelyn] that was standing near the First Years area, and went over to introduce himself. "Hello, I'm Hugo, Hugo Hamilton. Haven't had a chance to talk to you all year, so I thought I'd say hi," he said with an easy smile.

Theodore bounded up the stairs, ready for another Charms lesson. His rucksack bounced on his shoulders, laden with textbooks and parchment. The day was beautiful, ideal for practicing casting various enchantments. His spell-casting was getting better, that much he knew without a doubt. Spells were coming more easily and were less likely to go astray from their intended target. It was exciting to know that he was improving in his studies. He remembered his first year, full of doubt in his ability to cast spells. This year, however, Theo noticed that he was gaining confidence in his spellcasting, and it was another thrill for him. He found something he was good at, and perhaps it would help him define his direction in life after he left Hogwarts, but only time would tell.

The young teen entered the classroom to a smirking Professor Drummond and a few other students. He went to his assigned area, already occupied a young Ravenclaw (Evelyn) who had been approached by a second, older Ravenclaw (Hugo). Theo, always one to keep to himself, approached a bowl of water that he decided he would practice his assigned charm--whatever that may be. He set his bag down beside himself, pulling out his trusty willow wand and textbook. He tucked the book under one arm, unsure of what page to open it to yet. Instead, he glanced around the mostly empty room, inspecting what other, older students would be practicing. The third and fourth years had targets set up in the center of the room, while the OWL and NEWT students had small items covered by shield charms. He couldn't help but wonder what they would all be doing today.

Wand in one hand, Paul took long strides up the moving staircase to the Charms classroom. Some people thought Charms wasn't very advanced magic, but Paul always enjoyed manipulating objects, and the harder work of Transfiguration came easier when you got a lot of practice with your wand in Charms. professor Drummond's lessons were always interesting, so he made sure he got there early, to secure a good seat amongst his Gryffindor fellows. However, today, they were going to work with -- of all things -- bowls of water. he wondered what this could possibly be.

A few students were in class already, some of his own year, and some older. he really didn't know either of the younger students since they were from other houses, but Paul greeted them anyway. He looked at the tables and bowls of water, and then at the targets that were set up for the older students. Their exercise looked like fun, but he had to work with the little bowls instead. He wasn't worried, his Charms work was usually adequate.

After lunch, Valentina felt sleepy, so she decided to leave her friends and take a nap, so she would be fresh for her afternoon Charms class. Had it not been for the patient tutelage of Mr. Hugo Hamilton, she might not be doing as well with her charms work, and she had a full hour to lie down before she had to go to Professor Drummond’s class. The afternoon sun felt nice and warm, and before she lay down, she used the little mechanical messenger bird to find Hugo and deliver a message. She wasn’t quite asleep when a reply came back. She saved every note he wrote and sent to her via the bird, and patted it on its metallic head before she lay down again, and drew up the covers.  Her alarm clock woke her in plenty of time, but her uniform skirt and blouse were wrinkled, so she spent a little while rearranging herself in the mirror before she shouldered her backpack and headed downstairs. She made it with plenty of time to spare, and felt quite refreshed from her nap.

When she got to the classroom, she saw Hugo talking with a young girl from their house. She smiled and made her way over to the girl as well. Some of the younger kids needed encouragement, and she knew that Hugo was always helping out small groups of kids with spells if they needed it. She had been one of those in First Year. How long ago that seemed. “Nice to meet you. I'm Valentina,” she said to the girl. “I had a good nap, I might feel like running this evening, Hugo, if you want to go?” she asked Hugo. When it was time to work, she went to the center section as the Professor had instructed. Targets were set up. Just what she was good at, target practice! Today was going to be a good lesson, or so she hoped. She got her wand ready, and squeezed Hugo's hand and grinned at him.

Feeling slightly bored just before the class were to begin, Evelyn gently prodded the reflective surface of the water in the bowl in front of her with her wand, watching with mild interest the ripples branching off from the tip of her wand. Being made of hazel wood*, her wand had the odd tendency to sometimes emit puffs of unwanted smoke when passing over hidden water. It was silent today, however, perhaps because the water she was playing in was not hidden.

She didn’t have long for her meditative thoughts when she was joined by a boy in her house. She had seen him – as well as who she assumed to be his girlfriend – in the common room. And, naturally, they shared the occasional class together. She didn’t know them by name, however, so when Hugo Hamilton joined her at her bowl of water she was somewhat surprised. Still, she gave him (as well as Valentina when she joined them) an easy and welcoming smile.

It’s nice to meet you both,” Evelyn returned with a nod. “My name is Evelyn.” Then she fell silent as the course of the discussion turned to running and took the opportunity to turn back to her bowl of water and pull a funny face at her reflected self. Running was definitely not on the list of things that she enjoyed doing, and she was silently glad that she was not asked to join Valentina.
