She sits alone in class, though it appears to be out of choice because she does not appear to believe anyone else is worth her time. As a prefect, Elayne strictly enforces the rules and does not allow leniency for anyone, though she is content to bend the rules for herself when she is alone. Members of the Quidditch team see her during practice, but she is almost always silent in the locker room afterward and does not participate in the group's other activities. She is intelligent and excellent at spell work, but she does not offer to help other students with their magic unless asked. If and when she is present at meals, she is often seen sitting alone with a small plate bearing a few pieces of toast, most of which lie abandoned on the plate after the meal. One of her strongest desires is finding someone who will love her and care about her, but she is too afraid to let people in to give anyone a chance to try. Her father was the person she loved and respected the most, and after he beat her brutally, Elayne's trust in anyone else was shattered, leaving her emotionally vulnerable. To protect herself, she continues to push other people away, keeping up the cold appearance without letting her true feelings shine through. This allows the depression and anxiety to fester, and without help, Elayne might not be returning for her next school year.

Her parents were very strict in the raising and breeding of their only daughter. While Moiraine tried to inject love into her relationship with her daughter, Leonard only tolerated little Elayne, not bothering to go out of his way to show affection he didn't feel. Soon, he used his influence over his daughter to turn her against her mother, thus alienating his wife and giving him more control over Elayne. As a toddler, Elayne was very similar to a regular child who enjoyed running through the gardens with her friends and coming home with grass stains on her knees, but her parents only allowed her to behave like that up until the age of four, after which she had to begin acting like a little lady. Elayne has been schooled in several different languages, and has traveled all over the world with her parents as they constantly groom her for her future position in the Malashima family. She has never seen any sign of discontent between her parents, and was never aware that her mother was in an abusive relationship.
